Plenary Lecture

Plenary Lecture 1: Bone Day 2, October 29(Fri), 2021 / 11:20-12:00 / Room 1 / LIVE Overview
Organizer: Yumie RHEE (Yonsei University)
Professor. John P Bilezikian is a world-leading doctor on the issues with calcium metabolism. As the world changes with advances in economic and social status, the clinical manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism(PHPT) has also been evolving. The clinical presentation of PHPT includes distinct clinical phenotypes. Managing asymptomatic PHPT is commonly challenging; there were four upgraded guidelines in 1990, 2002, 2008, and 2013. John will be covering the recently updated discussion in this matter: “Parathyroid diseases, 2021: new concepts, new guidelines”. Thanks to recombinant human PTH(1-84), managing hypoparathyroidism patients also advanced. Unfortunately, this agent is not available in Korea, but he will share his experiences of using this in North America.

Plenary Lecture 2: Thyroid Day 2, October 29(Fri), 2021 / 14:00-14:40 / Room 1 / LIVE Overview
Organizer: Sun Wook Kim (Sungkyunkwan University)
Dr. YoungKee Shong is currently a Professor at the Division of Endocrinology, Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. He will give us a lecture about the new concept on the use of antithyroid drugs from his experience of 40 years in thyroid research.
Antithyroid drugs were used to treat Gravess’ disease for more than 70 years but they are regarded as ancillary tools for Graves’ disease treatment because of relatively high relapse rate. The current guideline tends to limit the use of antithyroid drugs no longer than 12 to 18 months and subsequent ablative treatment, mostly radioiodine, in cases of remission failure. Recently several well-analyzed retrospective studies are published about the efficacy of long-term antithyroid treatment of Graves’ disease. He will give us insight about the long-term use of antithyroid drugs in cases

Organizer: Hail KIM (KAIST)
Prof. Andrew Stewart has been studying the mechanism how beta cell proliferation is regulated in human pancreatic islets and trying to develop the beta cell regeneration therapy. In this plenary session, he will present the accomplishments in the world of beta cell regenerative drug development and his lifetime effort to develop beta cell regeneration therapy.

Plenary Lecture 4: Aging Day 3, October 30(Sat), 2021 / 14:00-14:40 / Room 1 / LIVE Overview
Organizer: Min-seon KIM (University of Ulsan)
Although it is the wish of most people to live and die in good health to the age of 100, the physiological mechanisms of healthy longevity are still not well understood. This keynote speaker, Professor Nir BARZILAI of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been contributing to elucidating the physiological mechanisms of aging and longevity through a genetic study on 750 centenarians who lived over 100 years of age and a study on more than 500 protein changes during the aging process in more than 1,000 people. Interesting topics related to aging and longevity will be covered in this lecture, such as the longevity-related IGF-1 receptor gene mutation and the potential use of metformin as a longevity treatment.
